Mr. Habiby The Jeweler

get in touch

Ayman Bishay, Mr. Habiby the Jeweler, came to New York from Egypt in 1999. He had been an accountant back home, and that is what got him in the door here—a jewelry store on 47th Street needed someone who could handle the books, and it turned out he could handle the customers too. He spent three years there doing both, learning the business from the inside while selling. In 2002, he opened his own store on the same block, and he has been there ever since.

These days, he deals in luxury watches, diamonds, gold, and custom pieces, both wholesale and retail. Watches are what he loves most—the engineering inside them, the history behind the names, and the way a good one gets handed down instead of thrown away. But after more than 20 years on 47th Street, the real pleasure is the people. He has sold engagement rings to men who came back years later with their sons. That is not something he planned on when he arrived with an accounting degree. It is simply what happened.
