Diane Maiese is a trailblazer in the world of competitive diving, an accomplished coach, international sports leader, and the founder of Diver City, an organization dedicated to expanding access, representation, and opportunity in diving and aquatic sports. In 1997, Maiese became the first Black woman to win an NCAA national championship in diving and went on to become a four-time NCAA All-American. Her career has continued to break barriers: she became the first Black woman to coach an NCAA Division I diving program, earned five Atlantic 10 Diving Coach of the Year honors, and became the first Black female World Aquatics-certified diving judge from the United States.
Today, Maiese is transforming her personal history of being “the first” into a mission to ensure she is not the last. Through Diver City, she works to create sustainable pathways into aquatic sports by connecting athletes and communities with coaching, mentorship, facilities, education, exposure, partnerships, and competitive opportunities. Her work has expanded from developing diving opportunities in the United States to supporting the growth of the sport internationally. At the heart of Maiese’s leadership is a simple philosophy: breaking a barrier may make someone the first, but real change happens when the path they create becomes a road others can travel farther than imagined.
