Khashayar Hematpour, MD, FHRS, is a cardiac electrophysiologist, physician-educator, and researcher whose career has focused on treating some of the most complex disorders of the heart’s electrical system. An attending electrophysiologist at the University of Texas in Houston since 2012, he has built extensive experience in advanced cardiac ablation and implantable heart-rhythm technologies while also teaching and training the next generation of cardiologists and electrophysiologists. His expertise has taken him beyond the operating room: he has served as a national and international speaker and has trained physicians in advanced techniques including cardiac device implantation, complex ablation, transseptal procedures, and lead extraction. He has also served as an investigator in major clinical trials evaluating emerging pacemaker, defibrillator, resynchronization, and ablation technologies.
His work reflects a broader mission: to push cardiovascular medicine beyond treating catastrophic events toward anticipating and preventing them. His research has ranged from atrial fibrillation and sudden cardiac death to novel cardiac technologies, and today that mission is extending into the use of wearable technology and artificial intelligence to identify dangerous cardiac patterns before they become life-threatening. Beyond medicine, Dr. Hematpour has maintained a longstanding commitment to service and the arts. He has participated in humanitarian medical efforts, including the World Health Organization’s polio eradication campaign and charitable cardiac-defibrillator implantation missions, and is an accomplished pianist who has performed benefit recitals supporting children undergoing cancer treatment.
